Geriatric Emergency Medicine Day

The course introduces participants to the key concepts involved in delivering high quality emergency care for the older adult, and is based on the concepts outlined in the British Geriatric Society’s ‘Silver Book II’. Topics covered include Assessment of Frailty, Delirium, Managing complexity and multiple comorbidities, an approach to simple functional assessment in an ED, recognizing changes in physiology and pharmacology with older age, management of falls, as well as getting care right at the end of life.

Fracture Fixation

Classroom  

This bone fracture fixation course will start with classification systems and decision making on the type of fixation of fractures in different scenarios. The practical sessions will range from the application of simple screws and plates to complex fixation of fractures using k-wires, tension band wiring, intramedullary nailing. We will discuss the principles of application of an external fixator. The bone models will be synthetic sawbones and animal legs with fractures for both the upper and lower limb.

This course will concentrate on knowledge in relation to correct cast application and removal for the upper and lower limb, caring for the limb in a cast and preventing associated complications. Correct selection of casts for specific fractures and ligament injuries will be demonstrated and performed.

Microsurgery and traumatic limb exploration

This microvascular and limb exploration course is a great introduction to operating under a microscope with micro instruments. After familiarisation with an operative microscope and the correct use of microvascular instruments, participants will practice their skills on a number of synthetic and animal bench models. Loup glasses will also be used to magnify the view while exploring a simulated wound in an animal limb.

If you would like to book and attend more than your FREE 3 full-day courses allowance, you will be required to pay an enrolment fee for the additional courses. However, this fee can be reimbursed via HSE’s Training Support Scheme. Further details can be found here
