This service is available free of charge to Surgical NCHDs registered on our CPD Support Scheme. It is completely voluntary for you to use this, but this logbook has been specifically designed by RCSI to support those who wish to build their surgical careers. It is part of our commitment to support all who work in the provision of surgical care to patients in Ireland.
Access to the RCSI Logbook will provide an opportunity for those in non-training places to use the same electronic logbook as is being used by trainees in our core and higher surgical training programmes. Our logbook is familiar to all our consultant trainers and supervisors which gives us the opportunity to have our logbook records validated. Your data will be stored securely by RCSI, backed up, and protected against loss

This CPD programme has been built to support the needs of surgeons, emergency medicine physicians and other medical professionals. The programme consists of over 120 courses, which will all be accredited by RCSI and recognised for maintenance of professional competence. We have a wide range of self-paced courses on offer, such as Communication Skills for Video and Telephone Consultation, Safe Clinical Handovers, Lean Healthcare Yellow Belt and Foundations in Robotic Surgery to name just a few. We have added a new course this year called ‘Adult Procedural Sedation and Analgesia in Emergency Medicine’. Additional postgraduate courses are available such as ATLS, Basic Surgical Skills, Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient and Level 1 Point Of Care Ultrasound Sign Off.
To help you develop your CV, we have a range of short certificates in many areas including emergency scenarios, leadership and simulation-based training. The Basic Surgical Principals and Practice Certificate was introduced in 2023 and was designed specifically for those not on formal surgical training programmes. Consultant led teaching sessions focus on the Intercollegiate Core Surgical Curriculum and the MRCS examination syllabus. The Basic Surgical Principles and Practice Certificate is a one-year programme delivered between September 2024 and June 2025. To be eligible you must be registered on Continuous Professional Development Support Scheme (CPD-SS), work within the Public Health Service and work as a Surgical SHO. Enrolment begins every year in July and closes at the end of August.
We have three academic postgraduate degrees available, and the numbers enrolling in these popular courses continue to increase every year. These include a Masters of Science in Advanced Clinical Practice (MSc), Masters of Surgery (MCh), and the online Diploma or Masters in Human Factors in Patient Safety (PG Diploma/MSc). Don’t forget our fellows and members portal which has been recently updated. The Portal is available to all RCSI Fellows, Members and Affiliate Members worldwide. It provides access to a range of content, benefits and resources that differ depending on your category of membership. Payment of your annual subscription fee guarantees access to exclusive extras including online surgical journals (The Surgeon, Annals of Surgery etc), benefits (campus access, merchandise) and career supports. The day will focus on feedback skills to improve your teaching and training in the clinical and simulation environments. A combination of theory, interactive exercises and high-fidelity simulation will be used to demonstrate the skills of giving effective feedback to learners.
This online comprehensive prep features a single full mock exam paper for two hours, designed to simulate actual exam conditions, followed by a detailed feedback session led by experienced emergency medicine consultants.

This information session is designed to provide guidance on applying for entry to the Irish Medical Council Specialist Division of the Register (SDR). There are various routes available to doctors who wish to be included on the Specialist Register, as outlined on the IMC website. https://www.medicalcouncil.ie/
This is a blended learning educational session for any doctors involved in providing procedural sedation. A 3-hour pre-course online module prior to attending the course. The course will provide participants with the ability to provide safe and effective sedation to patients in the ED.
This interactive workshop will discuss the management of the unstable patient for both variceal and non-variceal bleeds. The course will concentrate on the management of a bleeding and perforated duodenal ulcer with both open and laparoscopic approaches.
This training session aims to empower the RCSI community to challenge poor behaviors which have become normalised and bring change through the reinforcement of messages defining the boundaries of unacceptable behavior.
This endoscopy workshop will introduce endoscopic techniques, sedation, bowel preparation and diagnostic recognition of pathology. The practical session will use both virtual reality endoscopic simulators and bench task trainers to practice doing gastroscopy and colonoscopy, on modules with different pathologies.
This online two-day course is designed for healthcare professionals in the ED, providing comprehensive training in radiological interpretation for daily ED operations. The course covers a wide range of topics, from common musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries to paediatric-specific radiology, chest and abdominal films, facial injuries, and more.
RCSI Emergency Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Certificate

This three-dayprogramme is a collaboration between the RCSI CPD support scheme and the Mater Hospital’s POCUS training group at the Pillar Centre and provides a practical hands-on overview of the skills required for the application of ultrasound in the acute setting.
This is a hands-on course where you will get expert formative feedback while practicing laparoscope handling, object positioning and tissue manipulation. You will then progress to performing a cholecystectomy on a simulated animal model.
The Masterclass in Stone Disease will present the latest in the field of surgical and medical treatment of renal stone disease. Participants will observe semi-live surgeries by expert national and international surgeons.
Financial Wellness: Financial Wellbeing, Spending, Borrowing and Your Credit Profile
Classroom
This session introduces financial wellbeing & why it is so important. It will also go through how to create a spending plan using the 50/30/20 budgeting rule, how to save successfully and borrow using the right resources. Also discussed will be the various types of credit and your credit profile.
This course will help you master your knot-tying and suturing skills from first principles. Experienced consultant surgeons will give you formative feedback on your instrument handling, tissue manipulation, and wound closure.
Accredited Certificate in Simulation-based Training in Human Factors in Patient Safety

This three-day certificate introduces human factors in healthcare. Each day has a separate overall theme, and begins with an overall introductory lecture, followed by a series of practical and interactive workshops developing on the key theme.
If a course is FULL – it is recommended to apply for the waiting list. Often doctors withdraw from courses closer to the date.
If you would like to book and attend more than your FREE 3 full-day courses allowance, you will be required to pay an enrolment fee for the additional courses. However, this fee can be reimbursed via HSE’s Training Support Scheme. Further details can be found here.

Safe Clinical Handovers
Quality healthcare requires clear and effective communication between healthcare professionals, teams, and patients. In this course, we will focus on one particular area of healthcare communication: clinical handovers. This online course aims to support clinicians to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively prepare and participate in clinical handover.
Communication Skills for Video and Telephone Consultation
Video and telephone consultations in healthcare are not new, but the COVID-19 crisis forced many clinicians to rapidly take up these kinds of consultations as a feasible alternative to face-to-face consultations. This is often a type of consultation that staff has not encountered before. Applying the Calgary-Cambridge guide to video and telephone calls provides a structured and safe approach to this virtual format.
The course is presented as a series of recorded one-hour modules. Each module, involving a separate specialty theme, will involve case-based discussions with a variety of guest speakers. Slides covering the content are provided, and a short series of MCQs based on the content covered is completed to complete the module.
This online course uses a case discussion format to revise the basics of ECG Interpretation for Emergency Medicine physicians. This online platform allows candidates to access the recorded content on demand, with the facility to repeat more challenging modules as desired. Candidates are required to complete a quiz at the beginning and end of the course.
Medical Science for Surgery and Emergency Medicine
RCSI in partnership with the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine https://acslm.ie/have developed a CPD/CME programme to maintain and develop their competence in this critical area of clinical practice.
The comprehensive programme of short online courses will cover 25 areas of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Together we have brought to you the first seven courses in this series which cover the following areas: Cancer Diagnostics, Surgical Microbiology, Blood Transfusion, Coagulation, Surgical Immunology, Heart Failure Assessment in the Emergency Department, Near Patient Testing (NPT)basic and applied pathology.
As part of the programme participants learn excellent techniques for improving processes and implementing change in your hospital or department, but they also develop abilities that are highly portable across the organisation and internationally.
The course includes mini-modules on large group teaching, small group teaching, bedside teaching, simulation-based learning, and Universal Design for Learning. Each mini module includes video content, curated reading lists and interactive activities.

Basics of Procedural Sedation and Analgesia in Emergency Department
This one-hour online course is designed to equip you with essential knowledge for providing safe and effective sedation in the Emergency Department. This comprehensive module will guide you through the fundamentals of procedural sedation, preparing you to handle challenging situations with confidence and expertise.
