Mr Muhammad Umair appointed RCSI Interim Technical Skills CPD Support Scheme lead.

Mr Muhammad Umair has been appointed Interim Technical Skills CPD Support Scheme lead at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Mr Umair will lead the delivery of RCSI's CPD Support Scheme in Surgical Technical Skills and will assist the delivery and the initiative to improve quality of postgraduate programmes, examinations, and skills assessment in Technical Skills.

Mr Muhammad Umair is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon joining us from Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore and he is taking over from Dr Leonie Heskin.

I am excited about the work done over the years by the RCSI to help, support and promote Professional Development of the NCHDs. I’ve been working in General Surgery with a Special interest in Colorectal for over 10 years in Ireland. I started my journey with the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland as a part of the IMG Training Program. This provided me the opportunity to complete a Master of Surgery from the RCSI.

During these years I have achieved Fellowship from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan, European Board of General Surgery, European Board of Coloproctology, and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. I currently serve as an Executive Member and Director of Communications of the European Board of Surgery, Division of General Surgery; and also, as a Clinical Lead for National Perioperative Patient Pathway Enhancement Program (NPPPEP) HSE/RCSI for Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore.

I have had the opportunity to be a part of Career Development and Support Programme for Non-Training Scheme Doctors - Short Life Working Group, RCSI and we have published an official document to help NCHD’s on the alternative pathway. I have led the work to establish a curriculum and course for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy for young surgical trainees in Pakistan and conducted multiple webinars for induction of new NCHD arriving to Ireland. As with all that we do, my overriding motivation is to bolster good practice for our patients.

I am delighted to be involved in the RCSI’s CPD Support Scheme education and training programme. RCSI has always provided a wide range of courses, both clinical and non-clinical. I believe a key objective is to help evolve our program to high end courses, in a scalable model. Then I believe we should leverage this model toward providing set standards to assure quality for our future NCHDs.I understand your educational and training needs and we will organise a comprehensive programme to assist surgeons with fulfilling the requirements of their Professional Competence Scheme and excelling during your surgical career, ensuring a positive learning experience.

I strive to make them better by your continued support and feedback, and fostering a collaborative environment that prioritises ongoing professional development. I thank you for your continued engagement with the RCSI and your commitment to your patients. I look forward to seeing many of you during the year.
