The aims of the course are: • To facilitate a discussion about the impact of error on the patient and doctor • To discuss the notion of the doctor as the 2nd victim • To demonstrate appropriate methods of disclosure of error • To provide the trainee the opportunity to practice open disclosure using role-play • To present the ASSIST model of responding to a medical error
At the end of the module the trainee should be able to: • Respond effectively to the experience of a simulated adverse event • Demonstrate an awareness of the impact of medical error on patients and healthcare workers • Demonstrate the skills to effectively and compassionately disclose an error or adverse event to a patient • Justify and defend the importance of honest error disclosure • Identify and consider the effects of and adverse event on the second victim • Appreciate the importance of facilitating peer support in the event of an adverse event

It is completely voluntary for you to use this, but this logbook has been specifically designed by RCSI to support those who wish to build their surgical careers. It is part of our commitment to support all who work in the provision of surgical care to patients in Ireland.
Access to the RCSI Logbook will provide an opportunity for those in non-training places to use the same electronic logbook as is being used by trainees in our core and higher surgical training programmes. Our logbook is familiar to all our consultant trainers and supervisors which gives us the opportunity to have our logbook records validated.
