3 Favourite things about your job

  • 1. The variety - no two shifts are ever the same
  • 2. The team - the emergency department in Galway has a a real sense of camaraderie
  • 3. Making an immediate difference – whether it’s resuscitating a sick patient, relieving pain, or reassuring someone at a frightening moment, the impact you have is real, which is hugely rewarding

When did you know you wanted to pursue a career within healthcare

I knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare from a young age after growing up with a sister who was frequently unwell. Spending time in hospitals and seeing the difference healthcare professionals made to her and our family inspired me to want to have that same impact on others

What is the most recent RCSI CPD course you've done - has it helped you in clinical practice?

I haven’t done one yet, but have booked onto the major trauma course and the airway course in February

What do you do in your spare time to unwind from work?

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, travelling when I get the chance, and switching off from work. I’ve been getting very into podcasts and audiobooks also at the minute

What book would you recommend to other NCHDs and why (could be work related/non-work)?

I would recommend “This Is Going to Hurt” by Adam Kay ( also has a TV adaptation) It’s an honest and often darkly funny account of working as a junior doctor, and it resonates strongly with NCHDs through its depiction of long hours, emotional highs and lows, and the importance of looking after yourself while working in healthcare
