Cardiothoracic and Vascular Workshop

The course will start with basic vascularanastomosis techniques using synthetic and animal models. Other vascular techniques such as lower limb vein harvesting and open and endovascular aortic aneurysm repair will be performed on part-task trainers and endovascular VR simulators. Chest drain insertion and the principles of sternotomy will be demonstrated and practiced. The placement of ports and the scope for thoracoscopy (VATS) will be demonstrated.

Minor Operations Workshop

You will master your knot tying and suturing skills from first principles. Experienced consultant surgeons will give you formative feedback on local anesthetic application, your instrument handling, tissue manipulation, and minor operative techniques. You will also perform minor operating procedures such as excision of a lesion, abscess drainage, sebaceous cyst and lipoma excision and ingrown toenail management. The principles of skin grafting and simple local flap design will be demonstrated.

This endoscopy workshop is designed for registrars already performing gastroscopies and colonoscopies independently. The interactive, case-based discussions will deal with themes such as practical polypectomy, tattooing, endoclip placement, endoscopic mucosal resection and visual footage of difficult real cases.

This endoscopy workshop is designed for registrars already performing gastroscopies and colonoscopies independently. The interactive, case-based discussions will deal with themes such as practical polypectomy, tattooing, endoclip placement, endoscopic mucosal resection and visual footage of difficult real cases.

This is a hands-on course, where virtual reality endoscopic simulators and bench task trainers will be used to practice gastroscopy and colonoscopy, on advanced modules with different pathologies. The workshop will be run in two parallel sessions to maximise simulator use.

Learning outcomes

  • Improved skills in preventing complications such as looping
  • Knowledge of the approach to polypectomy and its optimal visualisation, classification and risk assessment
  • Practice at simulated polypectomy of pedunculated and sessile lesions
  • Increased knowledge of the therapeutic options and diathermy settings for performing a polypectomy
  • Awareness of key performance indicators (KPI) for colonoscopy
  • Increased insight into the visual changes in GI pathology
  • Insight into methods of preventing and treating polypectomy complications

It will also cover career development advice, planning a surgical career, a surgical trainee’s perspective on how to successfully apply for CST and HST, and the exciting opportunities available to support future surgeons to achieve their ambition.
