Medical Science for Surgery and Emergency Medicine
New online modular course

We know from research that 70% of all the important decisions affecting a patient's life involve a laboratory or pathology test. Applied pathology and the principles underlying system-specific pathology underpin most areas of clinical practice and are core areas of knowledge for Membership and Fellowship examination across all postgraduate medical training bodies in Ireland and Internationally.

RCSI in partnership with the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine https://acslm.ie/ have developed a CPD/CME programme to maintain and develop their competence in this critical area of clinical practice.

The ACSLM is the professional body representing over 3000 medical scientists in Ireland. Medical science is a regulated and state-registered profession.

This partnership with RCSI Surgical Affairs aligns with the ACSLM’s vision, which is “To support excellence in clinical science and laboratory medicine, and in doing so, enhance patient outcomes”.

Laboratory medicine is a clinical service and the clinical sciences that underpin laboratory medicine are; Cellular Pathology (Histopathology), Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Immunology, Medical Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics, POCT, Transfusion and Transplantation Science and Virology. Medical scientists are at the forefront not only in the provision of these services but in the management and delivery of the services.

With the ACSLM, RCSI are developing a comprehensive programme of short online courses (2 CPD credits each) covering 25 areas of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Today together we are launching the first seven courses in this series which cover the following areas:

  • Cancer Diagnostics
  • Surgical Microbiology
  • Blood Transfusion
  • Coagulation
  • Surgical Immunology
  • Heart Failure Assessment in the Emergency Department
  • Near Patient Testing (NPT)basic and applied pathology

These courses are open to all Healthcare Professionals and are funded for NCHDs through the HSE’s CPDSS and TSS schemes.

Master of Surgery (MCh) of Surgery by Module Testimonial
2023 intake

Applications for our full-time and part-time Master of Surgery (MCh) by Module are now open.

Applications for our full-time and part-time Master of Surgery (MCh) by Module are now open and will close on Monday, 17 July 2023

Read Gerard Sextons (Class of 2020) programme testimonial to learn more about how this programme has helped Gerard progress in his career in surgery.

“I completed the Master of Surgery programme in 2020 with the topic of my thesis being head and neck cancer in the elderly population of Ireland. I completed my thesis during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic and the support I received from the college during this uncertain time was superb. The primary feature of the MCh program from which I continue to benefit in my current practice is the instruction I received in research methodology - from designing a protocol to performing and interpreting my own statistical analysis, I was encouraged from the outset to undertake original research and provided with the tools I needed to make this a reality.

The support of both clinical and methodological supervisors further aids the prospective candidate.

The program also features a heavy emphasis on topics of immense value to the surgeons of tomorrow - ethical practice in surgical care, management and leadership in surgery, and the process of innovating medical devices, to name but a few.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the MCh program in RCSI as a stepping stone for anyone considering a career in surgery.”
