Critical decision making on a virtual ward round for Emergency Medicine

Considerable obstacles to learning exist in the surgical ward environment including the high volumes of patients, untimely surgical emergencies, shift working and ongoing increases in administrative tasks. This highly interactive on–line course will provide you with the opportunity to develop your critical thinking, escalation and communication skills.
Coping with an adverse event or an error can be devastating for doctors. It is vital to use expert communication skills to inform the family and patient if relevant of exactly the details and to apologise. The doctor has been identified to be the 'Second Victim' as often considerable distress can be experienced and doctors require expert support from their team and from hospital management. This course will address the strain which doctors can feel when they are involved in an adverse event and will provide scenarios for skills rehearsal and discussion.
This course will focus on research methodology. The course will help to develop some of the skills required to plan, conduct and disseminate individual research projects. Specific topics will include study design, levels of evidence, defining research questions and obtaining ethical approval.
This programme covers instruction in technical skills using a combination of synthetic bench models, animal cadaver tissue and various technical simulators. Topics covered include: Stomas; ileostomy / colostomy, Bowel anastomosis – end-end; hand sewn / side – side; stapled, incisional and open inguinal hernia management.
Principles and practicalities of healthcare systematic reviews

This course is designed for participants who want to perform and/or critically appraise systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The course predominantly covers systematic reviews of healthcare interventions, with some material being equally relevant to systematic reviews of other topics. There are two parts to this course.
This training session aims to empowers the RCSI community to challenge poor behaviours which have become normalised and bring change through the reinforcement of messages defining the boundaries of unacceptable behaviour.
This course has been developed as a follow-on course to the Excel – Introduction course, with a specific focus on introducing participants to the features of the application that are used to build, manage and analyse lists of data (records).
If a course is FULL – it is recommended applying for the waiting list. Often doctors withdrawn from courses closer to the date.
If you would like to book and attend more than your FREE 3 full-day courses allowance, you will be required to pay an enrolment fee for the additional courses. However, this fee can be reimbursed via HSE’s Training Support Scheme. Further details can be found here.
