Hip Fracture Focus Group Study Invite and Systematic Review Collaboration
October 2021

The Irish Hip Fracture Database (IHFD) will soon allow for the recording of long-term outcomes including mortality and function at 30 days, 120 days and 1 year. We are currently conducting a qualitative study with different health professionals (approximately 30 participants in total) to find out the challenges and strategies for following up patients with hip fracture.

Dear Colleagues,

The Irish Hip Fracture Database (IHFD) will soon allow for the recording of long-term outcomes including mortality and function at 30 days, 120 days and 1 year. We are currently conducting a qualitative study with different health professionals (approximately 30 participants in total) to find out the challenges and strategies for following up patients with hip fracture. Through your clinical role you will likely have followed up patients at the 6 week clinic. You may also have been involved in audit or research collecting these outcomes after hip fracture. Your experiences and opinions are very important to the development of this initiative and the future of the IHFD. I am conducting focus groups and interviews on Zoom during the week of 1st November. It would involve a once-off hour long involvement from you online and neither you nor your hospital will be identified in results. If you would be happy to take part in this anonymous study please contact me on m.walsh@ucd.ie for more information and we can schedule a time that works for you.

I will also be conducting a systematic literature review examining prognostic models after hip fracture beginning around April 2022. I will be looking for assistance and co-authorship with this. It would involve screening 1000-3000 Titles/ Abstract and assisting with detailed critical appraisal of approximately 30 papers. We hope it will result in a good publication. If you are interested in this, you can contact me for more information. Please include some background on your experience with research methods, systematic reviews and/ or statistical modelling.

Kind regards,

Mary

Professor Mark Shrime, O'Brien Chair in Global Surgery at RCSI, will address the complex issues around surgery, poverty and international development during a special Kapuscinski Development Lecture on Monday 1 November. All are welcome to attend this talk, which starts at 1pm.

The Kapuscinski Development Lectures give top global thinkers a platform to discuss development in the European Union and beyond. The lectures honour the name of Kapuscinski, a Polish journalist and writer, who died in 2007. Kapuscinski, whose books were translated into many languages, was often named the "Third World Chronicler" or "Voice of the Poor" for his famous reportages and books describing developing countries on all continents.  The Kapuscinski lecture series offers students from European Union member states an opportunity to learn and discuss about development issues such as climate change, human rights, aid effectiveness, Europe-Africa relations and Sustainable Development Goals, among others. These high-level events also contribute to the debate and formulation of the European development policy. Over 30,000 participants have enjoyed more than 100 lectures since they began in 2009.

Professor Shrime joined RCSI as O'Brien Chair of Global Surgery in 2020. A co-author on the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery, Professor Shrime leads the university's Institute of Global Surgery in its work to address the provision of surgical care in low- and middle-income countries. Professor Shrime joined RCSI from Harvard Medical School where he was Director of the Center for Global Surgery Evaluation.
