CPD Course Spotlight - Procedural Sedation and Analgesia
Hybrid / Cork
This is a blended learning course which covers these basic principles of safe and effective procedural sedation for the non-anaesthetist.
Please note: This course consists of two components: an online pre-course learning (one hour) and a classroom training day (seven hours). All online pre-course learning must be completed before attending the classroom training day. Failure to do so may result in refusal of entry. The classroom training will take place in Cork.
This course will help you to identify the most appropriate, safe and effective strategy to ensure the management of hypotensive and tachycardic patients reporting to emergency departments and what to do if the event an anaesthetist is not available.
Suitable for: SHOs and registrars in all surgical specialties, emergency medicine doctors involved in procedural sedation.

Those who have previously completed the BSPP will be given preference for entry into the programme. This programme will utilise a blended approach to teaching. Teaching resources will be housed on the Moodle platform. Technical skills training will be delivered face to face on campus for three full days. The online sessions will be live (synchronous) with faculty present in the class. Pre-course reading and post-course exercises will be required to be undertaken on top of attending online classes.
This programme offers a comprehensive educational support system for NTSDs across Ireland. This support system will be delivered online primarily and will be housed on Moodle. This certificate course will be a high-quality structured programme which will deliver both live (synchronous) and asynchronous education episodes on a regular basis throughout the academic year.

RCSI expands global surgical training network with new centres in Egypt and India
RCSI has expanded its international surgical education network with the establishment of two new Basic Surgical Skills (BSS) centres in Egypt and India, strengthening access to high-quality surgical training across both regions
The new centres, located at Alexandria University in Egypt and Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute in Puducherry, India, will provide surgeons and surgical trainees with the opportunity to develop and enhance essential technical skills through RCSI's internationally recognised Basic Surgical Skills programme.

From insightful keynote lectures, insightful posters, our innovative RCSI TeleSurgery event in collaboration with Cornerstone Robotics and more, this year's Freyer meeting brought together the community of surgery 🏥
It was a pleasure to talk to attendees throughout both days on an array of areas including surgical education, training, research, examinations, and more.
With our recent release of our brand-new RCSI CPD Support Scheme Brochure (including 180+ courses from September 2026 to May 2027) we were delighted to hand out physical copies of our brand-new brochure while also talking to NCHDs in Surgery and Emergency Medicine about our upcoming courses.

Please note that registrations are now open for RCSI’s established RCSI Millin Meeting which will take place on Friday, 13 November 2026.
This year’s RCSI Millin Meeting will focus on surgical research and training, with an eye to topical issues. For surgical trainees, the meeting will provide important insights about how to develop better academic research skills and how to integrate research into the surgical career path in a way that supports your career goals.
For surgical researchers, the update from the National Surgical Research Support Centre and the competition for the RCSI National Surgical Research Medal will be of particular interest. Surgical Researchers will also have the opportunity to submit their abstracts whereby 6 will be chosen for the Oral Poster Award Presentations to compete for the RCSI National Surgical Research Medal. Attendees can also nominate themselves for our brand-new “Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Trial Activity” award.
For consultants and surgical trainers, the morning session will update on the supports available to improve the quality of research in your department, both for your trainees but also showing ways to assist you in increasing your professional networks and collaborations.
HRB funds two international surgical trials supported by RCSI National Surgical Research Support Centre

We were delighted to welcome RCSI Surgical Society medical students to the RCSI Robotic Surgery Training and Research Centre for a day of hands-on learning and discovery.
Throughout the day, students were introduced to the fundamentals of robotic surgery, explored how different robotic platforms operate, developed basic technical skills, and participated in a human factors emergency undocking scenario.
A huge thank you to Katelyn, Ziyi, Justin, and Éabha for their enthusiasm, participation, and contribution to a fantastic day.
