COVID-19 - Attention all retired Surgeons / Emergency Medicine doctors and or doctors not currently employed by HSE

At this challenging time for our health service, RCSI has been contacted by doctors who have recently retired from active practice but wish to volunteer to support the current massive effort being undertaken by our health service. Most retired doctors are in one or more at risk groups and many are not in a position to volunteer. Everyone can play their part by following the guidelines issued by the HSE and HPSC.

Some doctors who have retired or those who are not currently in active practice might be in a position to fulfill an appropriate role in support of front line service providers over the coming weeks and months. It may be some time before you are required and training, support and supervision will be provided. It is not likely that you will be asked to perform in a direct patient contact role, especially in relation to COVID-19 patients, but your clinical skills and experience will be valuable in supporting patient care and allowing others be redeployed for front line roles.

If you would like to put your name forward to be included in the database of practitioners who are available if required, please complete the online form HERE with your name, specialty, years since retirement, telephone number and email and any particular comments you would like to share. Please indicate if you are currently registered with the Medical Council. If you have already volunteered through another route, you need not complete this declaration (but it would be useful for our records if you could).

We will forward the details you supply on the form (only) to the HSE via the National Clinical Programme in Surgery and the HSE will contact you directly in due course, please be patient.

If you are not in a position to volunteer, we do not expect any reply.

In the meantime, even if you are not in a position to volunteer, you might like to review:

HSE current guidance in relation to the Coronavirus https://www2.hse.ie/coronavirus/
HPSC guidance for health practitioners https://www.hpsc.ie

The entire surgical and emergency medicine community stands together at this difficult time for everyone and we appreciate your support.

Finally, you will be aware from our previous email, that the Medical Council has issued specific advice regarding the implications of COVID-19 for the maintenance of professional competence and doctors who will not meet their PCS requirements this year due to the outbreak, should complete a declaration to that effect HERE

Should you have any queries, please contact Marie O'Boyle at the PCS Office :  01 402 2743 or by email:  pcs@rcsi.ie
