REMINDER RE-ENROL : Professional Competence Scheme
1st May 2020- 30th April 2021

Dear Dr

IMC NO

We note that you have still to renew your enrolment on the RCSI Professional Competence Scheme for the PCS year 1st May 2020 – 30th April 2021.  Please note you must pay this fee to be enrolled in the scheme, to enter credits for the current year 2020-2021 and to be able to produce a Statement of Participation when required.

While the Medical Council have recognized that, for some doctors, it will be difficult to meet the requirements set out in their rules, it is still necessary for every doctor to enroll / re-enrol in a Professional Competence Scheme, record their professional development activities in their PCS portfolio and record at least 25 CPD credits of the 50 CPD credit total for the year 1st May 2020 – 30th April 2021.

RCSI would encourage you to take a broader approach, where it is possible to do so, to ensure you participate in at least 20 hours of external activities (these can be online courses/seminars/conferences/webinars etc) and record this activity in the External category, participate in at least 20 hours of hospital based events like Grand Rounds, MDTs and quality improvement activities (even if these are by web conference) and record this activity under the Internal category.  You should continue to read, particularly the key journals for your specialty, and record your reading under the Personal Learning category.  Auditing the outcome of care process is more important than ever and we recommend that every surgeon and Emergency Medicine NCHD or specialist should continue to conduct and record an audit of some aspect of their practice every year.

  • If you are no longer registered with the Medical Council, you should inform us that you have withdrawn from the register and we will no longer issue you with reminders.
  • If you are now enrolled in a formal (Medical Council accredited) Training Programme, you are not required to enrol in PCS. You should notify us of your status and we will no longer issue you with reminders.
  • If you have changed specialty and are enrolling in a PCS scheme operated by a different Training body, you should notify us of your status and we will no longer issue you with reminders.

If you no longer intend to work in Ireland and meet the criteria set out by the Medical Council to demonstrate that you are maintaining your competence in another jurisdiction, you should ensure that you have made the Medical Council aware of this. You should notify us of your status and we will no longer issue you with reminders. Please note that if you intend to work for more than 30 days in Ireland during this next year, you must enrol in an appropriate PCS and pay the required fee.

Even if you have declared that you are no longer in active practice but have chosen to retain your registration, you must renew your enrollment in PCS by paying the appropriate fee. There are special fee arrangements in place for retired surgeons.

If you are no longer on the Supervised, General, or Specialist section of the (Irish) Medical Council’s Register please notify this office by email pcs@rcsi.ie as this will allow us update our records and ensure that you do not receive unnecessary communication in relation to the PCS

We encourage you to re-enrol at your earliest convenience by clicking here

Failure to re-enrol may result in regulatory action by the Medical Council including referral to the Fitness to Practice committee.

If you have any difficulty with this, please do not hesitate to contact the PCS office at pcs@rcsi.ie or 01 402 2743

Yours sincerely
