Message from the Medical Council

Maintenance of Professional Competence Update  https://www.medicalcouncil.ie/covid-19/

The Medical Council recognises that doctors’ personal and professional development has escalated recently through familiarisation with clinical and ethical guidance and change provision of treatment and care for patients in a pandemic situation.

In acknowledgement of this the Medical Council will not be monitoring doctors’ compliance with maintenance of professional competence requirements for 2019 / 20.

This means that:

  • Doctors will not be required to make a declaration about their maintenance of professional competence when retaining their registration in 2020l
  • The Medical Council and Professional Competence Schemes will not verify or audit doctors' CPD records for the 2019/20 Scheme Year
  • Doctors will not be required to make up any shortfall in CPD requirements for the 2019/20 Scheme Year
  • Please retain your enrolment with your professional competence scheme

The Council will continue to review the situation and post advice on the Medical Council's website regarding CPD for the 2020/21 Scheme Year.  Continue to keep safe.

All information is available at the following link: https://www.medicalcouncil.ie/covid-19

In the Medical Council Message  8th April 2020 above, the Medical Council recognises that participation in certain activities and recording compliance with CPD requirements is particularly challenging in the current environment for many registered medical practitioners and therefore the Medical Council will not be monitoring compliance with maintenance of professional competence requirements for the Professional Competence Scheme year 1st May 2019 – 30th April 2020.

However, we would encourage you to upload any valid CPD activity that you have participated in for the PCS year 1st May 2019 - 30th April 2020.

A Guide to Clinical Practice for New Returning Surgeons

In this current time comprehensive induction processes are difficult to deliver and RCSI have now developed a Guide for Doctors returning to clinical practice in Ireland or doctors commencing clinical practice in Ireland in a surgical context for the first time.

In this current time comprehensive induction processes are difficult to deliver and RCSI have now developed a Guide for Doctors returning to clinical practice in Ireland or doctors commencing clinical practice in Ireland in a surgical context for the first time.  In addition, doctors in all fields may be required to take on roles outside their usual experience or scope of practice.

This guide will provide you with access to resources to help you adapt while continuing to practice safely.

In addition, some doctors will have period of being isolated at home over the coming months. While some will be ill and need the time to recover, others may be asymptomatic and could use the opportunity to expand their skill set. It is likely to be some time before conferences, other than online webinars, restart but we have identified a growing set of online courses that might prove useful.

This guide will be updated regularly. While you may choose to print it, or the forward the document to others, we urge you to use the live version on our internet site as this will have the most up to date information  Please click HERE for this Guide
