Expressions of Interest of Performance Assessors

Performance Assessment is designed to be a non-punitive, developmental process for a doctor who has been referred due to concerns about performance. The process is directed and monitored by the Registration and Continuing Practice Committee (RCPC) of the Medical Council.

Following referral to Performance Assessment a doctor can be required to undertake one or more specific performance assessment activities. The activities assess the doctor’s knowledge and skill, or the application of knowledge and skill, or both, against the reasonable standard expected of a doctor practising the same type of medicine.

Specific activities require the appointment of ‘assessors’ to assess the performance of a doctor within the context of his/ her practice. Typically, an assessment team comprises two medical assessors and one non-medical assessor. Assessments are co-ordinated by a Performance Assessment Case Officer.

The Medical Council has a ‘panel’ of Performance Assessors who are trained to conduct such assessment activities on its behalf. The Medical Council wishes to recruit additional assessors (both Medical and Non-medical) for its Performance Assessor Sub-committee and has opened an Expression of Interest process for this purpose.
