Re : Invitation to submit a Video for the Annual Charter VIDEOSURGERY Meeting, Wednesday 1st Feb 2023

The Charter Day Meeting is only a few months away and the VideoSurgery Meeting, will again be one of the opening meetings, on Wednesday 1st February at 5.30 PM. VideoSurgery is now in its 33rd year which is testimony to the attraction of surgeons and trainees to videos of real surgeons performing their “Master Procedure”.

All successful videos can be transferred to the RCSIs - VideoTextBook of Operative Surgery hosted on YouTube and available to surgeons and trainees worldwide as a standard of care reference.

It will also be available to Irish Surgeons for the CPD points program.

We are happy to receive videos of any procedure which you consider of interest for trainees, or surgeons, particularly procedures that you believe to be one of your “Master procedures”.

We are very appreciative of Open surgical procedures and Emergency procedures, such as Hartmann’s procedure, embolectomy from wherever, aneurysm surgery, vascular bypass surgery, as these are so rarely captured.

This desire for open surgery comes also from the realisation that open surgery is almost a dying art and unless standard techniques are recorded, they will need to be re-invented.

If undertaking an emergency open procedure please ask (persuade) the Theatre Sister for the Laparoscopic stack because the recording equipment is fantastic.  The SHO or the Registrar might be asked to hold the camera and to only view the operation through the video screen.

We are keen that the video be edited to 7.00 min to allow for at least 3 min discussion. The Regs and SHOs usually are skilled at editing but if you have no one on staff we should be able to help.

Adding a soundtrack is easy: Just dictating into your phone as you watch your edited video and record.  The RCSI IT team can stick it to the video.

If you have any queries please email me at tnwalsh@rcsi.com

Kind regards

Tom
