Minimum standard document for acute surgical assessment units in Ireland launched

The ‘Minimum standards document for acute surgical assessment units in Ireland’ was officially launched by the NCPS in February 2018. This document acts as a guide for those wishing to set up an Acute Surgical Assessment Unit (ASAU) within their organisation, as well as an accreditation review document for those units up and running.

The National Clinical Programme in Surgery has been working with the Healthcare Pricing Office, and gained agreement that all units that are accredited against the standards document will receive an inpatient funding rate under Activiy Based Funding (ABF). This means that hospitals streaming appropriate patients directly to an accredited ASAU would receive additional funding.

The two ASAU pilot sites are making good progress in reducing PET times, avoiding admissions by having senior decision makers review patients more efficiently. Contact surgeryprogramme@rcsi.ie to discuss the appropriateness of an ASAU in your hospital.
