Message from Prof Kevin Barry

As we approach the end of the year, I hope you can reflect on a successful period of training, filled with opportunities to learn and grow in your surgical skills. Your dedication and hard work are the foundation of your progress, and we remain deeply committed to supporting you throughout your journey—from the early days of core and specialist training to achieving your CSCST.

The path through surgical training is rarely straightforward. Challenges are an inherent part of the process, whether in exams, clinical placements, or balancing the demands of work and life. Remember, you are not alone. If you find yourself struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Support is readily available—be it from your trainer, training programme director, myself, or Sinead Dixon at the Department of Social Affairs. Sinead can be contacted confidentially via the wellbeing email at wellbeing@rcsi.com. Whatever you may face, know that others have been in your position, and we are here to help you navigate these challenges and find solutions tailored to you.

Your time in surgical training should be a period of positive growth—a time to hone your skills, build your competencies, and prepare for a lifelong, fulfilling career in surgery. Embrace the learning opportunities, celebrate your achievements, and always keep moving forward.

Wishing you continued success and well-being in the year ahead.

Mr Kevin Barry

Director of National Surgical Training Programmes, RCSI
