The Irish Surgical Training Group is a voluntary organisation run by trainees for trainees. We strive to provide a voice for surgical trainees on educational and welfare issues within the college and beyond. Across the academic year, we organise several trainee-focused events.
On November 9th, we hosted our annual Careers’ Day & Aspiring Surgeon’s Research Symposium in the RCSI College Hall. Careers’ Day is an excellent opportunity for junior trainees and medical students interested in a surgical career. ISTG president, Ms Megan Power Foley, opened the event. Prof Kevin Barry, Director of Surgical Training in Ireland, delivered the first talk, outlining the Core and Higher Surgical Training schemes. This was followed by talks from the CST Lead Consultant in each speciality, from Cardiothoracics to Vascular, taking us through a typical workday, what patients they see and operations they perform, and what they find challenging and rewarding about their jobs. We stopped for a coffee break and a networking session, where attendees could talk informally with the consultants, the ISTG reps in each speciality and each other. This year, in partnership with RCSI SIM, we introduced “Simulation Corner” – where trainees and students could try their hand at laparoscopic surgery.

This was very popular! The academic session followed, with six high-quality oral presentations and twenty eye-catching posters. Our panel of judges awarded the prizes for best oral and poster presentations to Dr Taya Keating and Ms Michaela Corvi.
Careers Day was a great success, with over 80 SHOs, interns and medical students attending. A big thank you to Prof Barry and the specialty lead consultants for joining us on a Saturday, to RCSI for their support and to our sponsors, Eido Healthcare. We look forward to seeing you all the ISTG Charter Week session on February 8th
